Who Killed the Kibbutz was always a non-starter: an attempt to give the narrative a mystery novel intrigue... but then reveal the kibbutz isn't really dead & nobody really "killed" it. (So.. bait & switch — bad tactic to pull on a reader.) I still like Look Back to Galilee.... but so far that only makes two of us. Love & Rockets (still title pending) does emphasize the tension between dreams of utopia/community and reality of conflict for the kibbutz, esp. the border communities like Shamir that faced both military bombardment & terrorist incursion. The reality of the rockets' threat appears throughout the book in various locations (Shamir, Hanita, Kiryat Shmona, Sderot and Kibbutz Migvan, Nahariya & Achziv), so it won't be an over-simplification (I hope). ... I'd go with The Dream of Utopia in Israel and the Kibbutz.... but my publisher doesn't like the "and". So I'm stuck with what I don't like: Love & Rockets, seems like a smug over-simplification of a double tragedy, the loss of the kibbutz and all those rockets that the world seems to think Israel deserves. Who Killed the Kibbutz is even worse--words like kill and war are over-used and seem to mock the real experience. I'd take Look Back to Galilee over the others and The Dream of Utopia in Israel and the World as subtitle--the whole world either directly or vicariously experienced the kibbutz.
